Chapter 34

Three weeks later, Steve found Maggie in one of the stalls in the barn. She was curled up in pain.

“Maggie? Honey what’s wrong?” he asked gently.

“I think it’s something I ate.” She said, obviously in agony.

“I’m gonna get you across to Uncle Greg. He can take a look at you.”

“Oh no. That’s okay. I don’t have any medical insurance. I’m sure I’ll be fine.”

“You’re covered on the company insurance.” He said, firmly. He picked her up and carried her to one of the trucks. He called Greg’s clinic on the way over.

It was lunchtime and Greg didn’t mind fitting Maggie in. Steve waited in the reception area and spoke to Patti. He wasn’t really worried until Greg appeared.

“She’s pretty shaken up. I’m sorry Steve, she lost the baby.” Greg said, sadly.

“What?” Steve was shocked.

“She miscarried.”

“I didn’t even know she was pregnant.”

“I reckon she was about ten weeks.”

“Oh Lord! I didn’t even know she had a boyfriend.”

“Um? You’re not...?”

“God no. She hardly speaks to me. She’s one of Mom’s helpers.”

“I though you and she... well she hasn’t stopped talking about you and I just assumed, sorry.” Greg ran a hand through his hair. “She’s got evidence of bruising and a rib injury. She said she fell from a horse.”

Steve looked at Greg. “Can I see her?”

“This way.” They walked off to the exam room. Greg knocked on the door, before opening it.

Steve stepped into the room. “We need to talk.”

She burst into tears. He was across the room in a second and gathered her into his arms. He held her for an hour while she cried. Luckily the afternoon clinic was quiet. Patti brought them some tea.

“What happened, Maggie?” Steve asked softly.

“My mom died from cancer. I went to live with my grandmother and uncle. My dad died when I was two.” She looked at him with an expression that held so much pain. “My uncle drinks.” She said, her voice barely a whisper.

Steve lifted her chin and made her look at him. “He did this to you?”

She pulled her face away from him.

“Maggie?”

She let out a sob.

“Maggie, tell me.”

She gave a single nod.

He wrapped his arms round her, his heart was breaking. “You’re safe with me. You understand that? He can’t hurt you now.”

“My grandmother. She’s old. She needs me to look after her.”

“I’ll take care of her.” He kissed the top of her head. “Will you tell Sheriff Lawson?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll be right back.” He let her go and turned to leave.

“Steve?” she sobbed.

“Yeah?”

“Thanks.”

“You may wanna reserve that for after you speak to the Sheriff. I’ll just be a minute.”

Outside the room, Steve called his parents and the Sheriffs office. When he returned a few minutes later, she was curled up trying to look as small as she could. The scene caused him to catch his breath. He wanted to find her uncle and rip him to pieces. How anyone could hurt such a sweet girl as Maggie, he would never know. He walked across the room and sat on the bed next to her.
